What is Dimethyl terephthalate ?
Dimethyl terephthalate is a white crystalline solid at room temperature and pressure, which contains two ester groups. These ester groups are highly electrophilic and are easily attacked by nucleophiles. Therefore, dimethyl phthalate can participate in a variety of nucleophilic reactions, such as acid-catalyzed ester hydrolysis, nucleophilic substitution reactions, etc. Dimethyl phthalate can undergo transesterification and polycondensation reactions, hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis reactions and hydrolysis reactions.

Application
- Dimethyl terephthalate is mainly used to synthesize polyester fiber, resin, film, polyester paint and engineering plastics, etc.
- Dimethyl terephthalate is mainly used to make polyester resin, and then to make films and fibers, as well as high-strength polyester insulating paint. Polyester film is mainly used as electrical insulation material and film production (such as as the base material for movie films, X-ray films, photographic films, audio tapes, video tapes, computer tapes, etc.). The most common use of polyester resin is to make fibers for fabrics, fishing nets, carpets, tire cords, etc. It can also be used to produce the plasticizer dioctyl terephthalate.
