4-Methylmorpholine N-oxide (NMMO) oplosmiddel is een bijzondere en uitstekende oplosmiddel met sterke oplosbaarheid voor cellulose. Het is een kristallijne vaste stof of vloeistof op kamertemperatuur, niet-toxisch, zwak alkalisch en heeft een sterke gigroskopichnost. Elk molecuul kan binden meerdere watermoleculen. Het is gevoelig voor verkleuring op 120 ℃ en ondergaat oververhitting reactie en vergassing ontleding bij 175 ℃, steeds een hoger tertiair amine-oxide.
