Benzil CAS 134-81-6 is a yellow crystal with a melting point of 95 ℃, optical activity, a relative density of 1.23, and a boiling point of 346-348 ℃. It is soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and ether, but insoluble in water. When reduced, it produces diphenylethanone.

Benzil wordt gebruikt als een fotosensibilisator, organische synthese intermediair, en ook als een lijm. Gebruikt als tussenproduct in de organische synthese en ook als insecticide. Dit product heeft een groot potentieel als een fotosensibilisator voor UV-uithardende harsen (UV-harsen). Benzyl heeft een breed golflengtegebied voor UV-overgevoeligheid.
