Ematossilina e eosina insieme compongono Ematossilina e eosina macchia, uno dei più comunemente utilizzati macchie in istologia. Metallo-haematein complessi sono utilizzati per macchiare i nuclei delle cellule prima di un esame al microscopio. Strutture che si colorano con il ferro o alluminio-haematein sono spesso chiamati basofilo, anche se il meccanismo della colorazione è diversa da quella della colorazione con coloranti base.
