Glycyrrhizic acid is metabolized by glucuronidase in plants, or by intestinal bacteria after oral administration, and can be hydrolyzed to produce two tricyclic triterpenoid stereoisomers, namely 18α-glycyrrhetinic acid and 18β-glycyrrhetinic acid.
