What is Isobutyric Acid CAS 79-31-2?

Isobutyric acid is a colorless, oily liquid with a pungent odor similar to butyric acid. Its relative density is 0.949 (20℃), melting point is -47℃, boiling point is 152~155℃, flash point (closed cup) is 76.67℃ , and refractive index is 1.3930 (20℃). Isobutyric acid CAS 79-31-2 is readily soluble in water and miscible with ethanol, ether, chloroform, etc. Free isobutyric acid exists in the roots of rice, beans, and arnica.

Aplicación

Isobutyric acid has similar uses to n-butyric acid, primarily in the production of corresponding esters. For example, methyl isobutyrate has an apricot scent, propyl isobutyrate has a pineapple scent, isoamyl isobutyrate has a banana scent, octyl isobutyrate has a grape scent, and benzyl isobutyrate has a strawberry or jasmine scent.
Isobutyric acid can be used in the synthesis of fragrances and as a solvent.
Isobutyric acid CAS 79-31-2 is also used in the manufacture of varnishes and plasticizers. Isobutyric acid has some important derivatives. Industrially, it is used as an intermediate in the production of isobutyronitrile, which is then converted into isobutamidine hydrochloride, a raw material for the insecticide diazinon.
Isobutyric acid is mainly used in the synthesis of isobutyrate esters, a raw material for the production of esters used in perfumes and fragrances, such as methyl isobutyrate, propyl isobutyrate, isoamyl isobutyrate, and benzyl isobutyrate. It can be used as a food flavoring, permitted under GB2760-1996, mainly in the formulation of flavorings for cream, apple, caramel, cheese, bread, and yeast. Isobutyric acid is also used in pharmaceuticals, textile auxiliaries (in salt form), and as a solvent in various chemical reactions (a solvent for lipids).

Características

1. Milder Odor: While still acidic, its pungent and putrid odor is significantly reduced compared to n-butyric acid. This makes it more desirable in applications requiring acidity while controlling odor (such as certain fine chemical intermediates).
2. Unique Reaction Site: The methyl branch on the α-carbon creates steric hindrance. This gives it unique selectivity in reactions such as esterification, allowing the formation of structurally specific derivatives (such as various isobutyrate esters).
3. Excellent Ester Products: Isobutyrate esters (such as ethyl isobutyrate and phenyl isobutyrate) are a cornerstone of the fragrance industry. They generally possess a fresher, milder fruity or floral aroma (such as rum, pineapple, and rose scents), and their quality is usually superior to the corresponding n-butyrate esters, making them widely used in high-end fragrances and food flavorings.
4. High Synthetic Value: Its branched structure makes it an ideal precursor for the synthesis of many fine chemicals, especially in the pharmaceutical field, where isobutyric acid can be used to synthesize pharmaceutical intermediates with tertiary carbon structures or chiral centers.
