Lithopone ist ein weißes, kristallines Pulver. Für eine Mischung aus Zinksulfid und Bariumsulfat, die mehr Zinksulfid es ist, desto stärker ist die Deckkraft und desto höher die Qualität. Dichte 4.136-4.34 g/cm3 unlöslich in Wasser. Es leicht zersetzt in Wasserstoff Sulfid gas, wenn es in Kontakt mit Säure, und funktioniert nicht bei Einwirkung von Schwefelwasserstoff und alkalischen Lösungen.
