Dimethyl carbonate CAS 616-38-6, referred to as DMC, is a colorless, transparent liquid with a pungent odor at room temperature. Its relative density (d204) is 1.0694, its melting point is 4°C, its boiling point is 90.3°C, its flash point is 21.7°C (open) and 16.7°C (closed), its refractive index (nd20) is 1.3687, and it is flammable and non-toxic. It can be mixed with almost all organic solvents such as alcohols, ketones, and esters in any proportion and is slightly soluble in water. It can be used as a methylating agent. Compared with other methylating agents, such as methyl iodide and dimethyl sulfate, dimethyl carbonate is less toxic and can be biodegraded.

Anwendung
Dimethyl carbonate (DMC) has a unique molecular structure (CH3O-CO-OCH3). Its molecular structure contains carbonyl, methyl, methoxy and carbonylmethoxy groups. Therefore, it can be widely used in organic synthesis reactions such as carbonylation, methylation, methoxylation and carbonylmethylation. It has a very wide range of uses. It is mainly used as a carbonylation and methylation reagent, a gasoline additive, and a raw material for synthesizing polycarbonate (PC). The large-scale production of DMC has developed along with the non-phosgene synthesis process of polycarbonate. Its uses are as follows:
1.A new type of low-toxic solvent can replace solvents such as toluene, xylene, ethyl acetate, butyl acetate, acetone or butanone in the paint and adhesive industries. It is an environmentally friendly green chemical product.
2.A good methylating agent, carbonylating agent, hydroxymethylating agent and methoxylating agent. It is widely used in the fields of food antioxidants, plant protection agents, etc. It is a widely used chemical raw material.
3.An ideal substitute for highly toxic drugs such as phosgene, dimethyl sulfate, and methyl chloroformate.
4.Synthesize polycarbonate, diphenyl carbonate, isocyanate, etc.
5.In medicine, it is used to synthesize anti-infective drugs, antipyretic and analgesic drugs, vitamin drugs, and drugs for the central nervous system.
6.In pesticides, it is mainly used to produce methyl isocyanate, and then to produce certain carbamate drugs and insecticides (anisole).
